Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Senior Janay Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) went 4-for-8 with two runs scored and a an RBI and sophomore Jackie Roth (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) was 4-for-6 with three RBI as the duo helped Bradley split a doubleheader at Missouri State Saturday. The Bears took the opening game 4-1, before the Braves posted a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
After dropping the opening game 4-1, Bradley scored the first five runs in the second game and went on to post a 6-3 victory. Freshman Taylor Cox (Loveland, Colo./Andover [Kan.]) drew her team-leading 20th walk of the season to open game two and Mitchell followed with a bunt single. The Braves loaded the bases when Roth drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single to center field to give BU an early 2-0 lead.
Bradley (12-22 overall, 3-9 MVC) struck for three more runs in the top of the third inning as Cox and Mitchell opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Senior Amanda Clack (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) plated Cox with a single through the left side and Mitchell was also able to score on the play. With a runner on third and two outs Roth drove in her third run of the game with a single to left to help Bradley extend the advantage to 5-0. All three of Roth's RBI's on the day came with two outs and nine of her 12 RBI on the year have been with two outs.
Missouri State (12-20 overall, 7-4 MVC) capitalized on two Bradley errors in the third inning to score three unearned runs. Caitlin Chapin drove in Christa Gammon with a two-out double to left center and Chapin and Jenna Schwark each scored on the Braves second error in the frame as the Bears cut Bradley's lead to 5-3.
The Braves added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Lauren Meister (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led things off with a pinch-hit single and pinch runner Julie Sherman (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sherman came around to score on a two-out RBI single to right by Mitchell, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the nightcap.
Junior pitcher Katie Dennis (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite) retired Missouri State in order in the seventh to close out her first complete game of the season and second of her career. Dennis struck out five and walked none, while scattering eight hits and three unearned run in the complete game as she improved to 3-5 on the year with the win. Lauren McGinley suffered the loss for Missouri State, dropping to 4-8 on the year.
Bradley managed just five hits off Missouri State starter Lauren Supak in the day's first game as she helped the Bears to a 4-1 win in the series opener.
Gammon walked to lead off the bottom of the third and the Bears had runners at second and third after a Kirstin Cutter single and stolen base. Schwark drove in a run on a squeeze bunt and Missouri State loaded the bases with a walk to Chapin. Alaina Burkhart drew another bases loaded walk to plate the second run in the inning and the Bears took a 3-0 lead when Schwark scored on a sacrifice fly.
Gammon got things started for Missouri State again in the bottom of the fourth, ripping a one-out triple to left center. Cutter knocked her in from third with a single through the right side to push the Bears advantage to 4-0.
Cox, who has drawn 10 walks in the last nine games and has reached base via a hit or base on balls in seven consecutive contests, led off the sixth inning with a walk. Mitchell followed with an infield single and the bases were loaded after a Clack single. Cox broke up the shutout, when she was able to race home on a Missouri State error. Bradley had the tying run on base when junior Brittany Fairbairn (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East/Kankakee) reached on the error with one out to load the bases, but Supak retired the next two batters as the Braves left the bases loaded.
Supak hit sophomore Megan O'Malley (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) with a pitch to open the top of the seventh, but settled down to retire the next three batters and improve to 6-5 with the 4-1 victory. Freshman Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) suffered the loss in the circle for BU, giving up seven hits as she fell to 0-5 on the season.
Bradley and Missouri State close out the three-game series Sunday with a noon contest in Springfield, Mo.
