Former Bradley student-athletes are excelling all over the world as professional competitors, highlighted by a championship series matchup between former Braves Zach Andrews and Eddie Cage in Spain's LEB Silver Division.
Although Cage's squad, Promobys Valle De Almanzora Tijola, shared the regular-season league title, Andrews' CB Penas Huesca team will take a 2-to-1 series lead into Wednesday's Game 4 in the best-of-five LEB Silver Finals. Both players enjoyed postseason experience at Bradley: Andrews helped the Braves to the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and the second round of the 2007 NIT, while Cage was on NIT teams in 1997, 1999 and 2001.
Averaging 11.6 points and 7.6 rebounds overall in his third pro season, Andrews has averaged 12.3 points and 11.7 rebounds through the first three games of the championship series. In his eighth pro season, Cage has averaged 9.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 41 games overall for Promobys, including 9.3 points and 1.7 rebounds during the first three games of the Finals series.
Elsewhere on the European hardwood, former Bradley forward Marcellus Sommerville spent the first half of the European pro season in Peoria rehabbing and preparing for an opportunity to return to action. Sommerville received that opportunity in December when he signed with Cholet Basket in the France ProA division, where he teams with a pair of college rivals - Randal Falker (Southern Illinois) and Sammy Mejia (DePaul) - for the regular-season league champion.
The trio has helped Cholet to the semifinals of the ProA playoffs against BCM Gravelines Dunkerque Grand Littoral. After sweeping Union Poitiers Basket 86 in two games in the quarterfinal round, Cholet dropped its opening game of the semifinals to Gravelines in overtime Saturday and will try to avoid elimination when the teams meet again Wednesday. Sommerville buried 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range in the playoff opener to highlight a 16-points, 6-rebounds effort.
