Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland setter Remy McBain collected nine kills and 27 assists to help the tournament-host Terrapins to a three-set victory against Bradley Saturday morning at the Maryland Invitational. The Braves fell 25-16, 25-21, 25-13 to even their record at 3-3 on the year.
Bradley trailed 15-13 in the opening set, when Maryland (4-1 overall) served three of its six first-set aces to highlight a 7-2 Terrapin spurt which gave UM a 22-15 lead. Maryland followed a Madelyn Ervin (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) kill with three straight points to take first set 25-16.
The Braves trailed by as many as eight (14-6) in the second set, before trying to rally late. Ervin sparked the push with a kill and an ace to fuel a 14-6 BU spurt which tied the set at 20-20. Freshman Amy Angelos (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) also helped the rally with two kills and a block. Maryland's Maddi Lee ended Bradley's run with a kill to give the Terrapins a 21-20 lead and back-to-back BU attack errors pushed the advantage to 23-20. The teams traded points before McBain closed out a 25-21 Maryland win with a kill.
The Terrapins scored the first four points of the third set and never let the Braves find their rhythm in the frame. Bradley scored the next two points, before Maryland answered with a 9-2 run to build a 13-4 lead. The Terrapins, which hit .394 in the third set, extended the lead to as many as 12 en route to a 25-13 win to close out the match.
Freshman Lauren Zerante (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led Bradley with seven kills, while senior Caitlin Staib (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) added six kills. Junior Rachelle Dejean (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had a team and season-best 10 digs in the loss.
McBain led the Terrapins with nine kills and 27 assists, while boasting a .643 attack percentage. Brittany Grove added eight kills, 12 digs and five block assists to help power Maryland to its fourth consecutive victory.
Bradley closes out play at the Maryland Invitational later today with a 3:30 p.m. (CDT) match against Fordham.
