AMES, Iowa -- Senior Mary Goldkamp (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) broke the school indoor mile record and 11 individuals turned in season-best times to highlight the final day of competition for the Bradley track and field team at the Iowa State Classic Saturday at the Lien Recreation Center.
Goldkamp broke Katie Nowak's previous indoor mile record of 4:50.88 set during the 2009 season, with a time of 4:47.38 Saturday morning.  Goldkamp finished first in her heat and was eighth overall in the mile (seeded).  She improved her personal-best mile time by 18 seconds and was one of 11 Bradley runners to turn in season-best time during Saturday's action.
"Mary Goldkamp ran one of the gutsiest races I have ever seen today," Bradley track and field head coach Marc Burns said.  "She was very smart early in the race and ran away from the field over the last 300 meters to win.  She has put herself in position to challenge for a Valley title in the mile in two weeks and it shows the rest of the team what is possible if they commit themselves to excellence and are willing to make sacrifices to be great."
Six other Braves clocked season-best times in the mile (unseeded) with freshman Whitney Schumacher (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) winning the title in her heat with a personal best of 5:12.55.
In the 800 meters, junior Michelle Hartman (Savanna, Ill./Prince of Peace) finished half a second behind her heat winner with a season-best time of 2:19.62 to pace three other BU runners who turned in season-best performances in the event.
"We made some great progress this weekend with 10 of 14 individuals turning in personal best performances," Burns stated.  "We competed hard and were rewarded with personal records.  It started Friday with Lauren's (Fog) performance in the 5K, continued with Cassie Lohmeier's effort in the 3K and culminated with everyone's efforts today.  We need to keep working hard but our staff feels like we are headed in the right direction with the Valley championships two weeks away."
Bradley will have its final tune-up for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 26 & 27) next Friday at the UWM Panther Tune-Up in Milwaukee, Wis.
