NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior third baseman Rob Elliott hit his first two home runs of the season to highlight a 3-hit game, but it was not enough to prevent Lipscomb (3-1) from handing Bradley (2-2) a 9-5 defeat in the final game of a three-team, double round-robin event Sunday afternoon at Dugan Field.
Bradley could not carry over the momentum of Sunday's 11-inning, walk-off win against Dayton to start the day and dug itself a 3-0 hole after five innings against Lipscomb before trying to rally.
Elliott led off the sixth inning with a single, stole second and scored on a Mike Tauchman triple. Designated hitter Brad Kimball plated Tauchman with a sacrifice fly to pull the Braves within 3-2, but Lipscomb answered with a pair of unearned runs off Bradley reliever Eric Holmes in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim its 3-run lead, 5-2.
Jason Leblebijian got one of the runs back in the seventh when he was hit by a pitch to start the frame, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Elliott made it 5-4 when he led off the eighth with a solo blast to left center, but the Braves wasted an opportunity for a bigger inning.
Kimball drew a 1-out walk, first baseman Derek Sprout was hit by a pitch with two outs and Leblebijian walked to load the bases. Sunday's first-game hero, freshman Austin Jarvis, came in as a pinch-hitter and flew out to center, however, to end the threat.
The Bison then blew the game open with a 4-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth. Making his college debut, freshman Cody Kentzel faced only two hitters to start the eighth, issuing a walk and plunking a hitter. Following a sacrifice bunt, both runners scored on a pair of Steve Adkins wild pitches for a 7-4 advantage and the Bison capped the inning with a pinch-hit, 2-run homer.
Elliott scored the game's final run with a 2-out, solo homer in the ninth.
Bradley starter Patrick Flanagan (0-1), a junior right-hander making his Braves debut, suffered the loss by surrendering two runs on three hits and a pair of walks in 2+ innings.
The Braves will return to the road next weekend for a 3-game set at Arkansas Little-Rock.
