LAKELAND, Fla. - Playing for the fourth straight day, Bradley's hitters were unable to get the timely hit and the pitchers struggled with their control as its 5-game winning streak came to an end Monday afternoon at the RussMatt Baseball 2011 Central Florida Invitational.
Bucknell starter Dylan Seeley (1-2) scattered eight hits in 8.1 innings and the Bisons (6-7) took advantage of eight walks from four Bradley pitchers in a 4-1 victory. The Braves (9-5) will have a day off before playing four more games in four days at the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational, beginning Wednesday against Jacksonville State.
The Braves started strong in search of their sixth consecutive win when third baseman Rob Elliott tripled and scored on a Mike Tauchman single in the top of the first inning.
Bradley starting pitcher Eric Holmes allowed only one hit through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth when Drew Constable hit a leadoff double and scored on a Travis Clark single to pull Bucknell even, 1-1.
Danny Gifford (1-1) relieved to start the sixth inning for the Braves and loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Constable drove home the go-ahead run with a single to left field, but Gifford escaped the jam without any further damage.
After Nick Gross escaped a similar bases-loaded jam in the seventh without any damage, Bradley narrowly missed out on a game-tying home run in the eighth when Bob Schuch's leadoff shot to right was snared from over the wall by Bisons rightfielder Gerry Runyan.
Bucknell took advantage of two more walks and an error by Elliott to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth and the Bisons picked up a pair of insurance runs when Bob Donato singled to left field.
Following consecutive 1-out hits by pinch-hitter Brad Kimball and shortstop Jason Leblebijian, the Braves brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, but Bucknell reliever Steve Carlin got Austin Jarvis to hit into a game-ending double play.
Although Bradley outhit Bucknell, 9-6, the Braves finished the game just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
