SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -- The Bradley men's golf team was sixth in the team standings after one round of play and senior Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) was tied for fifth early in the second round when play was suspended at the par-72 Club at Porto Cima Monday afternoon due to lightning.
The Braves shot an opening round 316 and were just four shots out of a tie for fourth place between Illinois State and Creighton (312) after 18 holes of play. Some teams played as many as five holes in the second round when the second lightning delay of the day forced the suspension of the second round.
The teams will continue the 54-hole tournament Tuesday morning, resuming the second round with an 8 a.m. shotgun start before playing the third and final round.
Thompson was tied for sixth after one round of play after a first round 76 and moved into a tie for fifth after starting the second round at one-under through the first three holes when play was suspended.
Freshman Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and sophomore Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) each opened play with first rounds 79's and were tied for 19th after first round action. Freshman Travis Kreiter (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) was 35th after an opening round 82, while fellow freshman Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) rounded out the scoring for with an 84 to finish the first round tied for 38th.
Pre-championship favorite Wichita State fired the low round of the day at 303 in the opening round and was followed by Drake at 306. Evansville was third after 18 holes at 310 with Illinois State and Creighton tied for fourth in the standings, two shots back at 312. Bradley was six shots out of the top three in sixth at 316, edging out seventh-place Missouri State (317). Southern Illinois closed out the first round in eighth at 322, while Northern Iowa rounded out the field in ninth at 329.
