SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Brock Chafin hit a pair of home runs, including a 3-run blast in the seventh inning, leading host Missouri State (30-18, 11-6 MVC) to a 7-4 Missouri Valley Conference baseball victory versus Bradley (22-26, 4-14 MVC) Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.
Sunday's win came on the heels of a pair of 1-run victories in the first two games of the weekend series, giving the Bears a 3-game sweep to answer Bradley's sweep last season in Peoria.
Bradley starter John Nasshan (3-6) cruised through the first six innings, allowing only one run on Chafin's first home run in the fourth, but he ran into trouble in the seventh by loading the bases with one out. Nasshan was in position to escape the jam unscathed after getting Aaron Conway to pop out to shallow center field, but Kevin Medrano laced a 2-run to right center to pull the Bears even, 3-3, and Chafin followed with his 3-run homer for a 6-3 lead.
With Nasshan cruising early, shortstop Jason Leblibijian put the Braves on the board first with an RBI single in the third inning and catcher James Kottaras added and a 2-run single in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Kottaras came through again in the eighth with another RBI single to pull the Braves within 6-4.
Spiker Helms got the insurance run back for the Bears in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly after Luke Voit opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Missouri State closer Dan Kickham worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save of the weekend.
Bradley will close the season with four consecutive home games, beginning at noon Tuesday with its non-conference finale versus Eastern Illinois at O'Brien Field. Wichita State will visit for the final Valley series, a 3-game set that will begin with a 6 p.m. contest Thursday at O'Brien Field.
