Box Score WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Freshman Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) hit the first home run of her career, but tournament-host Kennesaw State answered with four homers of its own to top Bradley 10-1 Friday afternoon in BU's first game at the fourth annual Phyllis Rafter Memorial.
Chandler hit a solo home run to leadoff the top of the third inning for Bradley's only run in the contest as Kennesaw State (8-1 overall) starter Amanda Henderson gave up five hits and struck out seven in the victory. Bradley (4-7 overall) loaded the bases with no outs later in the frame following Chandler's homer, but couldn't push another run across and left four runners in scoring position in the contest.
The Owls got all the runs they would need with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sharon Swanson led off the inning with a double and Kaylee Williams reached on a BU error. Lindsay Vollmer followed with the first of her two home runs on the day, hitting a three-run blast to right center. Amanda Burns followed with a solo home run of her own to knock Bradley starter Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) out of the game and give Kennesaw State an early 4-0 lead.
Chandler's homer in the third cut the Owls lead to 4-1, but Kennesaw State struck for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Vollmer led off the inning with her second home run and Carly Van Auken later hit a two-run double. Van Auken eventually scored on a single to center field off the bat of Jessica Cross as the Owls pushed the advantage to 8-1.
Vollmer capped a 3-for-3 day at the plate for Kennesaw State with a single to open the fifth and Jensen Hackett capped the scoring later in the inning with a two-run homer to left center to close out the 10-1 Owls' victory.
Senior Julie Sherman (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Camp took the loss in the circle for the Braves, dropping to 1-3 on the season. Senior Lindsay Hufeld (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone/Illinois Central) pitched the final three innings in relief.
Bradley continues play at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial later today with a 5 p.m. (CST) game against Central Arkansas.
