Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Six Bradley errors led to seven unearned Central Connecticut State runs as the Braves fell 11-6 to the Blue Devils to wrap up play at the Under Armour Showcase Sunday.
Bradley (10-10 overall) held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the third, but the Braves combined to commit five errors in the third, four and fifth innings as Central Connecticut State (6-5 overall) scored nine runs (six unearned) during that stretch.
Senior Jackie Roth (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) got things started for Bradley in the top of the first, drawing a one-out walk and stealing second. Roth scored the first run of the game on a RBI single by sophomore Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) to give BU a 1-0 lead.
Arielle Bruno reached on the first of six BU errors to lead off the bottom of the first for Central Connecticut and later scored. Tessa Brown put the Blue Devils in front 2-1 with an RBI single later in the inning.
Roth came up big again in the top of the third, plating senior Julie Sherman (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) with a one-out triple and eventually scored on a single by sophomore Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley). Basham gave the Braves a 4-2 lead when she scored on a single off the bat of freshman Shannon King (San Jose, Calif. /Archbishop Mitty).
Central Connecticut answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and another three runs in the the fourth to build an 8-4 lead. Macy Stefanski drove in a run with a single in the third and a Bruno single and BU error on the play allowed two runs to put the Blue Devils in front 5-4.
In the fourth, a Bradley wild pitch allowed one run to cross and another BU error led to the second Central Connecticut run of the inning. A RBI single by Sarah Vlahos pushed the Blue Devil advantage to 8-4.
Bradley got a run back in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by sophomore Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls), but three BU errors in the bottom half of the inning led to three Central Connecticut runs and gave the Blue Devils an 11-5 lead.
Sherman reached on an error in the top of the sixth for the Braves and Basham drove in her second run of the game with a run-scoring single. Bradley wouldn't score another run, however, as Central Connecticut won for the sixth time in its last seven contests.
Lynch-Crumrine suffered the loss for Bradley, dropping to 5-7 on the year. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate, while Basham went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI to help highlight a 10-hit day for the Braves.
Bradley will face 23rd-ranked Syracuse Tuesday at 2 p.m. (CDT) in Clearwater, Fla., before taking on in-state foe SIU Edwardsville Thursday in Edwardsville, Ill.
