SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Freshman Sarah McMahon (Colfax, Wis./Colfax) ran Bradley's fastest 5,000 meter time since 1998 to finish third in the event and freshman Kyela Specht (Munster, Ind./Munster) won her heat in the 1,500 meters to highlight action for the Bradley women's track and field team at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival Friday.
McMahon was third overall in the 5,000 meters and joined Mary Ellen Hill as the only BU runners to clock a sub 17-minute 5,000 meter time, finishing in a time of 16:55.61. Pepperdine's Lauren Lodge won the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:54.24 to beat out McMahon by less than one and a half seconds.
Sophomore Cassie Lohmeier (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) was seventh in her heat of the 5,000 meters, turning in the fourth career-best time in school history (17:11.40). Fellow sophomore Whitney Schumacher (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) also had a strong outing in the first 5,000 meter race of her career. Schumacher was eighth in her heat and 17th overall in the field with a time of 17:30.10, turning in the sixth fastest career-best time in program history.
Specht got the day started on a high note, winning her heat in the 1,500 meters by improving her season-best time by more than seven seconds. Specht was eighth overall in the 1,500 meter field with a time of 4:38.89, turning in the 11th fastest time on the BU career-best list.
Bradley assistant track and field coach Mary Goldkamp finished ninth in her heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational Friday night, running a 10:13.04. Goldkamp's time was an Olympic trials b-qualifying standard putting her in consideration for the 2012 Olympic trials.
Sophomore Emily Delvo (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) will be Bradley's lone representative at Saturday's Stanford Invitational. She will run the 800 meters at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
