PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Daniel Young (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) shot a final round 73 to claim medalist honors at the Hotels at Grand Prairie and help the Bradley men's golf team to a third-place team finish Saturday at the par-72 WeaverRidge Golf Club.
Young entered the day second in the individual standings and shot a one-over par 73 Saturday to finish the 54-hole tournament at one-under par 215. He edged Loyola-Chicago's Erik Hoops by one shot for medalist honors and is the first Bradley men's golfer to earn medalist honors since Travis Kreiter won the Bulldog Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 17, 2011.
Loyola-Chicago had two of the top three individuals and four of the top seven to cruise to the team title with a three-round score of 878. Wisconsin-Green Bay had the best round of the day with a 295 and finished 14 shots behind the Ramblers in second at 892. Bradley was third overall at 901 and the Braves finished 26 shots ahead of fourth-place finisher Nebraska-Omaha (927). Chicago State rounded out the field in fifth at 1011.
Freshman Seth Trolia (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) tied for 10th in the individual standings at 228, 13 shots behind Young after a final round 83. Sophomore Andrew Weisenborn (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) shot an 82 and was 16th overall at 234, while sophomore Travis Kreiter (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) was one shot back in 17th at 235 following a final round 78. Freshman Danny Masrin (Palatine, Ill./Jakarta International School) rounded out the team scoring with a 78 Saturday and was 19th at 236.
Sophomore Kyle Gunther (Dunlap, Ill./Peoria Christian) was in the field as an individual and matched a career-best with a 72 in the final round. Gunther was ninth at 227, while junior Corey Verseman (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) carded a 78 to finish in a tie for 13th (230).
Bradley returns to action Sunday, April 22 at the Battle at Warren in South Bend, Ind., in the squad's final tournament before the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the end of the month.
