SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Bradley senior point guard Walt Lemon, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Julian H.S.) is one of 45 players named to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year, according to an announcement today from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
One of two Missouri Valley Conference players (Indiana State's Jake Odum) named to the watch list, Lemon is The Valley's active scoring leader with 1,146 career points. Lemon was a first-team NABC All-District 16 selection as a junior last season, when he joined Braves legend Hersey Hawkins as the only players in MVC history to record at least 500 points (545), 100 rebounds (147), 100 assists (133) and 70 steals (75) in a single season.
As further evidence of Lemon's all-around solid game, he became just the fourth player in Bradley history to lead the team in both scoring and assists in a single season, his 75 steals tied for 20th nationally and he also led the Braves with 128 defensive rebounds. By matching his 2012-13 scoring average of 15.6 points per game, Lemon will climb into the top 10 on Bradley's all-time scoring list this winter.
Lemon is one of seven returning starters to a Bradley team that ranked among the nation's most-improved teams last season, when the Braves finished 18-17 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
The Braves will play the first of two preseason exhibition games Monday when they host Upper Iowa in a 7 p.m. contest at Renaissance Coliseum. The on-campus exhibition game is included in the complete season-ticket package at the Courtside, Platinum, Gold and Silver levels and tickets for the game have been mailed to those season-ticket owners, as well as the Bronze-level season-ticket owners who selected the Upper Iowa game in their package. Single game tickets are on sale and are available for $20 individually or $50 as part of the Coliseum Four Pack promotion that includes four baseline tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks.
