Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Freshman Rachel Jones (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) collected 16 of her team-high 23 kills in the final three sets and pace four Bradley players in double figures in kills as the Braves held on for a 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 15-12 victory against Indiana State Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.
Bradley (9-4 overall, 3-1 MVC) hit a combined .379 in the first two sets and jumped out to a two-sets to none lead, before Indiana State (7-8 overall, 1-3 MVC) held off late BU pushes in both the third and fourth. Jones notched five of her season-best 23 kills on just six swings in the final frame to help the Braves close out the match with a 15-12 victory.
In the opening stanza, Bradley hit .406 as a team and built a 23-19 lead on back-to-back Amy Angelos (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) kills. Sophomore Jessie Tulacka (Westmont, Ill./Downers Grove North) had a kill and freshman Melissa Hoerber (Fulton, Mo./Fulton) closed out a 25-21 win for the Braves with an ace.
A 5-1 Bradley spurt midway through the second set gave the Braves a 20-16 lead and BU cruised to the 25-19 victory to take a two-sets-to-none lead.
Indiana State's Morgan Dall tallied eight of her match-high 27 kills in the third set and helped the Sycamores avoid the sweep with a 25-23 win. Bradley never led in the third frame and trailed 24-19 before making a late run. Junior Allie Falter (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had a kill and followed a Tulacka kill with a block. Angelos pulled the Braves within a point at 24-23 with a kill of her own, but Dall found the floor with her eighth kill of the set to finish off the Sycamore win.
The fourth set went back and forth with 16 ties and five lead changes before Indiana State was able to force a deciding fifth set with another 25-23 victory. Sycamore setter Loni Mackinson broke a 22-22 tie with her only kill of the night and Dall had a block to give Indiana State a 24-22 advantage. Angelos answered with a kill for Bradley, but Dall notched another kill as the teams went to a fifth set.
Jones, who hit .559 on the night and boasted a .652 attack percentage in the final three sets, helped Bradley jump out to a 6-1 lead with three kills during the opening spurt. Indiana State rallied to pull within two points at 10-8 and 12-10, but another Jones kill gave the Braves a 13-10 lead. Senior Alise Tupuritis (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) chased a Dall kill with one of her own to keep the BU lead at three (14-11) and junior Madison Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) followed another Sycamore kill with her only kill of the night. The Kamp kill finished off a 15-12 win for the Braves, who improved to 4-1 at home for the first time since 2005.
In addition to Jones' effort, Angelos had 16 kills and a pair of blocks as she passed Cindy Novak for 12th in career kills at Bradley. Angelos has 991 kills in her Bradley career and enters Saturday's match needing nine kills for 1,000 in her career. Tupuritis had 10 kills and 13 digs for her team-best seventh double-double of the year and Tulacka had 10 kills in the victory. Senior Lauren Zerante (Elmhurst, Ill./York) matched a season-best with 26 digs to help pace the Braves.
Dall finished with 27 kills and 14 digs to lead Indiana State, while Mackinson added 45 assists and 17 digs. Bree Spangler hit .429 and collected 18 kills for the Sycamores.
Bradley continues a season-long, four-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against I-74 rival Illinois State at Renaissance Coliseum.
