PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) has been named the Bradley Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced Wednesday after scoring 32 points in Bradley's 98-92 season-opening victory against Illinois.

Young was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after scoring a career and game-high 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting in Bradley's victory against Illinois last Friday.  She also added six rebounds, four assists, one block and a pair of steals.  In the second half, Young hit 4-of-6 shots and had two rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals to help the Braves erase an 11-point halftime deficit. 

Her 32 points tied for the eighth highest scoring output in school history and were the most by a Bradley player in a home contest since Genny Mueller had 33 points against Indiana State on March 6, 2004.  In addition, Young had the most points in a season opener for a Bradley player and helped BU open the season with a victory against a BCS opponent for the first time since 1998-99.  An elementary education (English) major, Young owns a 3.90 cumulative grade point average. 
 
Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week.  The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.

Young and the Braves return to action Friday, playing the second game of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Carver Arena.  The Bradley men's basketball team takes on Chicago State Friday at 7 p.m. with the women's squad facing Stony Brook at 9:30 p.m.
