Box Score PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley jumped out to a 13-0 lead, but Stony Brook chipped away at the BU advantage throughout the contest and held off a late Bradley push to edge the Braves 83-79 Friday night at Carver Arena.
Junior Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) finished with a team-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and senior Kelly Frings (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added 13 points to lead Bradley (2-1 overall), which suffered its first loss of the season.
Stony Brook (2-1 overall) started the game 0-for-7 from the field and Bradley took advantage with a 13-0 run to open the game. The Seawolves made 11-of- 23 shots to close the half, however, and trailed by just one (37-36) at the break.
Bradley struggled offensively early in the second half, but trailed by just four points at 57-53 nearing the mid-point of the period. Stony Brook answered with a 13-4 spurt, which included five points from Chikilra Goodman, to go in front 70-57.
The Braves trailed by 15 (74-59) with five minutes to go, before making a late rally attempt. Senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) started the run with a shot in the lane and Catie O'Leary (Janesville, Wis./Parker) followed a Stony Brook miss with a layup. A pair of Spinas-Valainis free throws made it 74-65 in favor of Stony Brook and Young had a pair of fastbreak baskets following back-to-back steals to cap a 10-0 Bradley run which cut the deficit to five (74-69) with 2:53 to play.
The Seawolves extended the lead back to nine points with just under a minute to play, but a Spinas-Valainis hoop and O'Leary three with 30 seconds left sandwiched around a Stony Brook free throw made it a five-point game again at 80-75. Stony Brook made three of four free throws in the final 12 seconds, however, to seal the victory for the Seawolves.
Five Bradley players scored in double figures, led by Young's 26 points. She is the first Bradley player to score 20 points or more in three consecutive games since Genny Mueller did so in the final three games of the 2003-04 regular-season.
Frings scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half, while Spinas-Valainis tied career-highs with 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jenny Smith (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) added 11 points off the bench and senior Kelsey Budd (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had 10 points to go with six assists and six steals.
Brittany Snow paced Stony Brook with a game-high 30 points, while Goodman added 22 points.
Bradley returns to action Sunday, facing South Florida in a 3 p.m. game at Renaissance Coliseum.
