JONESBORO,
Ark. – The bottom
two hitters in the Arkansas State order combined to go 5-for-7 with six runs
batted in, leading the host Red Wolves (2-0) to a 10-1 college baseball victory
against Bradley (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
Bradley senior outfielder Mike Tauchman was 2-for-4 with a
double, the Braves managed only one run on Bob
Schuch's RBI single in the second.
Three Arkansas State pitchers
combined to scatter seven hits while striking out nine. Starter Daniel Wright (1-0) earned the win by
completing the first seven innings, allowing the lone run on five hits with
seven strikeouts.
In his first appearance since being
forced to cut the 2012 season short with a hip injury, junior right-hander John Nasshan (0-1) suffered the loss
for the Braves by allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits in his 5.2
innings.
The Braves took the game's first
lead in the second inning after first baseman Derek Sprout singled with one out, took second on a Curtis Bunch walk and scored on Schuch's
single into left field. After a wild
pitch put both runners into scoring position, Wright escaped the jam by
striking out Tyler Leffler and David Compitello.
After Nasshan started with a pair of
scoreless innings, Baker led off the bottom of the third with a home run to tie
things up. Alex Potts reached second on
an error, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored the go-ahead run on a
Ryan Emery ground out.
The Red Wolves gradually stretched
the lead to 5-1 after six innings, then broke the game open with a 5-run
seventh frame.
Bradley had runners in scoring
position in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings, but the Braves went
0-for-10 with runners in scoring position after Schuch's second-inning single.
The teams will wrap up their 3-game
weekend series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Tomlinson Stadium. Sophomore left-hander David Koll is scheduled to make the start for the Braves.
