Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Amy Angelos (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) had a match-high 16 kills and fellow senior Alise Tupuritis (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) notched her third consecutive double-double, but Evansville held Bradley to a combined .107 attack percentage in the third and fourth set to top the Braves 25-27, 25-15, 19-25, 14-25 Saturday at the Carson Center.
The loss was Bradley's first Missouri Valley Conference setback of the year and dropped BU's record to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in MVC play.
Angelos attacked at a .382 clip and collected a match-high 16 kills in the setback. Tupuritis added 15 kills and a season-best 17 digs for her team-best sixth double-double of the year. The double-double was the fourth in the last five outings for Tupuritis.
Bradley fought off a pair of Evansville (6-9 overall, 1-3 MVC) set points in the opening stanza to pull even at 24-24. The squads traded points before UE”s Rachel Tenhoor found the floor with a kill and a Bradley attack error gave the Purple Aces a 27-25 first-set win. Angelos had six of her match-high 16 kills in the opener.
The Braves pounded 19 kills in the second set and hit 389 in the frame to cruise to the 25-15 win and pull even in the match. Angelos and Tupuritis each had five kills in the set and combined for a .563 attack percentage in the frame. Junior Allie Falter (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had back-to-back kills and sophomore Lea Sack (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) served up consecutive aces to highlight a 6-0 Bradley run which gave the Braves a 13-6 advantage. Sack added another ace down the stretch and Tupuritis had four kills during a 7-4 Bradley spurt in the easy victory.
Evansville came up with five blocks in the third set and pulled away midway through the frame with a 6-3 spurt en route to an 18-12 lead. The Purple Aces stretched the lead to as many as 10 points and took a two-sets-to-one lead with a 25-19 win.
Three Bradley attack errors helped fuel a 6-0 UE run in the middle of the fourth set and the Purple Aces built a commanding 18-6 advantage. Katie Klages tallied seven digs in each of the final two sets (24 in the match) and helped Evansville collect 21 digs in the fourth as her squad held the Braves to an .024 attack percentage in the set. The Purple Aces took the fourth set 25-14 to close out the match.
Freshman Rachel Jones (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) joined Angelos and Tupuritis in double figures with 11 kills. Tupuritis tied senior Lauren Zerante (Elmhurst, Ill./York) for team high honors with 17 digs to help lead Bradley defensively.
Ashley Ring paced Evansville on offense with 14 kills to go with 12 digs, while Emma Roberson added 11 kills without an attack error.
Bradley opens a season-long, four-match home stand Friday with a 7 p.m. match against Indiana State at Renaissance Coliseum.
