Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley connected on a season-best nine three pointers and forced 27 Missouri turnovers as the Braves topped the visiting Tigers 76-64 Saturday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum for the first victory against a Southeastern Conference foe in program history.
Senior Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) collected 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and six steals to help highlight the victory for Bradley as she was the first Brave with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and at least steals in a game since Raisa Taylor against Indiana State on March 5, 2011.
Bradley entered the game having made just 13-of-55 (23.6 percent) from beyond the arc in the last four games, but connected on a season-high nine triples to snap a seven-game losing skid in the series with Missouri (5-2 overall) which dated back to an 83-78 win for the Braves in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 27, 1994, when the Tigers were members of the Big Eight Conference.
Young made a pair of three-pointers during one of her best all-around performances of her career, but freshman Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber/Schule) helped lead the three-point barrage for the Braves by nailing 4-of-5 from long range en route to a season-best 18 points.
Missouri entered the contest shooting 46 percent from the field and averaging nearly nine three-point makes per game, while Bradley had averaged just 3.5 three-pointer per game on the year. The roles were reversed Saturday afternoon, however, with Bradley forcing 27 Mizzou turnovers and limiting the Tigers to 3-of-19 shooting (15.8 percent) from beyond the arc, while making 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from three-point range.
Bradley trailed 19-18 nearing the eight-minute mark of the first half when back-to-back three-pointers by Fantasia Vine (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Schlueter sparked a 16-0 run for the Braves. Vine added a three-point play after a Young steal and a Schlueter three gave Bradley a 30-19 lead approaching the five-minute mark. Schlueter found Young for a hoop and Young capped the spurt which gave the Braves a 34-19 lead with 4:06 to play in the first with a driving layup.
Missouri held Bradley scoreless the final four minutes of the first half and trimmed the Bradley advantage to 34-23 at the break. The Tigers continued to chip away at the BU lead and eventually pulled within three at 44-41 with 11:37 to play. Junior Sameia Kendall (Kansas City, Kan./Raytown/Johnson County) had a basket and Young followed with a steal and breakaway layup. Sophomore Charnelle Reed (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor/Western Illinois) put the finishing touches on a 7-0 Bradley run with a three-pointer from the corner to push the Bradley lead back to double digits at 51-41.
The Braves extended the lead to as many as 13 points at 61-48 with 5:46 left on a Young layup and never let Missouri cut the lead under six down the stretch as Bradley closed out the 76-64 victory for the team's first win of the year. Missouri was the first SEC to play in Peoria since Kentucky since Dec. 1992.
Young scored 13 of her team-high 24 points in the second half and made 8-of-14 shots to pace three Bradley players in double figures. The 24 points helped Young climb five spots on Bradley's career scoring list into 24th all-time on The Hilltop.
Schlueter had three assists, a pair of blocks and a steal to go with her season-high 18 points. Vine added 10 points and four steals before fouling out. The Braves forced 15 first-half Missouri turnovers, including six in a four-minute stretch to key the 16-0 run.
Jordan Frericks led Missouri with game highs of 27 points, 17 rebounds and six steals. Kayla McDowell added 10 points and eight boards for Mizzou, who played its first true road game of the season. The Tigers shot just 48.1 percent from the free throw line (13-for-27).
Bradley continues an eight-game home stand Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game against Western Illinois at Renaissance Coliseum in the team's final outing before finals. Tuesday will be Facebook Fan Appreciation Night with fans able to receive a voucher for group rate pricing via the Bradley Athletics facebook page.
