BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Senior Marina Groenewegen (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary/Southern Idaho) helped highlight a 10-run first inning for the Braves with a RBI single and grand slam as Bradley posted a convincing a 17-0 victory against Canisius Saturday afternoon at the Hilltopper Spring Fling.

The 17-0 victory against the Golden Griffins was Bradley's largest margin of victory and most runs scored in a game since a 20-0 victory against Jackson State on Feb. 8, 2004.  Senior Bailiegh Basham (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon/Lake Land C.C.) drew a pair of walks to break Julie Jehle's school career walks mark of 69, pushing her career total to 70 in the win.

Thirteen Bradley players scored and the Braves (4-8 overall) belted three home runs in the victory.  Freshman Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) earned the win in the circle, giving up four hits in three and one-third innings of work to improve to 2-4 on the season.

Bradley got started early with the first six batters reaching safely.  Groenewegen followed up back-to-back walks to open the game with a RBI single to drive in the first run of the contest.  Junior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) drew a bases loaded walk and junior Shannon King (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) gave the Braves a 3-0 lead with a RBI single.  Senior Mariah Cole (Springfield, Ill./Chatham Glenwood) drew a bases loaded walk to push another run across before freshman Kelly Kapp (Freeburg, Ill./Gibault Catholic) made it a 5-0 lead with a RBI single.

Basham drew her second walk of the inning to break the Bradley career walks record with a free pass with the bases loaded to push the Bradley advantage to 6-0.  Groenewegen then capped the 10-run inning with a grand slam to left center as the Braves built a 10-0 lead before Canisius had a chance to bat.

Bradley loaded the bases in the top of the second with a single and a pair of walks for senior Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls), who drove in a pair of runs with a single to left.

The Braves added two more run in the top of the third to push the lead to 14-0 on a two-out, two-run homer by King.  In the fourth, Bradley added another run on a groundout and sophomore Kathryn Spenn (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) ripped another two-out, two-run homer down the left field line to push the BU advantage to 17-0.

Bradley scored 11 of its 17 runs with two outs and drew a season-high 11 walks.  Groenewegen was 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI, while King finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Sarah Andrews suffered the loss for Canisius (2-6 overall), giving up five runs on just two hits in one inning of work to fall to 1-4 on the year.

The Braves continue play at the Hilltopper Spring Fling Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. game against Miami (Ohio).
