PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior guard Mason Alwan (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods/Lincoln Land C.C.) has been named one of 10 Missouri Valley Conference Leadership and Service Award winter recipients, according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday.
A marketing major with a 3.23 cumulative grade point average, Alwan has earned a spot on the Bradley Athletic Director's Honor Roll following each of the last two semesters. He has volunteered at the Methodist Kourage Kids Camp and assisted with the Heart of Illinois Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.
Alwan has also spent time reading to children at Hines Elementary School and played an integral part in the Bradley men's basketball team's adoption of Johnah and Jarrett Sahr, serving as one of the primary mentors for 5-year old Johnah who is in recovery from Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma and his older brother. His community service projects also include volunteering for Doughnuts for Dads.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.
Alwan will play the final home game of his career Tuesday night (8 p.m.) against #2 Wichita State at Carver Arena.
