ST. LOUIS - Bradley senior guard Walt Lemon, Jr. is a repeat selection for both the All-Missouri Valley Conference second team, as well as The Valley's All-Defense Team, according to a vote of 40 MVC head coaches, sports information directors and league media members announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Lemon enters this week's Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship as the league's active career scoring leader with 1,697 career points and he has joined MVC legends Larry Bird, Darren Brooks and Hersey Hawkins as the only players in league history to accumulate 1,600 career points, 350 career assists (362) and 200 career assists (218). Lemon earned second-team all-league honors last season when he joined Hawkins (1987-88) as the only players in Valley history to total 500 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 70 steals in the same season and he needs just six more rebounds for a repeat all-around performance: 551 points, 94 rebounds, 119 assists and 74 steals.
The league's third-leading scorer this season at 17.8 points per game, Lemon shares the league lead with 74 steals and is fifth by averaging 3.8 assists per game, making him the only player in The Valley to rank among the top five in all three categories. Along with Southern Illinois' Desmar Jackson, Lemon is tied for seventh nationally with his 74 steals.
Bradley (12-19, 7-11 MVC) is the No. 7 seed for this week's MVC Tournament and the Braves will open the postseason with a first-round game against No. 10 seed Loyola Chicago (9-21, 4-14 MVC) Thursday at 8:35 p.m. at the Scottrade Center. Thursday's Bradley-Loyola game will be televised by the MVC-TV Network, though flagship stations FOX Sports Midwest and Comcast SportsNet Chicago both have NHL obligations, bumping the basketball game to their secondary "Plus" channels in the Blues and Blackhawks markets, respectively.
