Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Four Bradley players hit home runs and each drove in three or more runs to help power the Braves to an 18-4 victory against Mississippi Valley State Sunday morning at the Razorback Invitational.
Bradley (9-13 overall) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up eight runs in the top of the first inning on just two hits. The first 10 Braves to come to plate reached base, with Bradley quickly loading the bases with an error and back-to-back walks to open the contest. Junior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle and fellow junior Shannon King (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) cleared the bases with a three-run homer to give Bradley a 5-0 lead.
Three consecutive walks following the King home run loaded the bases again and senior Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls) drove in a run when she hit into a fielder's choice. Sophomore Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) gave the Braves a 7-0 advantage when she scored on a wild pitch and Joseph scored on a RBI groundout by senior Marina Groenewegen (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary/Southern Idaho) to cap the eight-run inning.
Mississippi Valley State (2-16 overall) took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first to pusha run across, but Clemente led off the top of the second with her first home run of the year to push the BU lead to 9-1.
A pair of walks in the bottom of the second led to another run for the Delta Devilettes and Mississippi Valley State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third to pull within 9-4, before another eight-run inning put the game out of the reach.
Bradley had runners at second and third after King led off the top of the fourth with a walk and senior Alex Chandler (Needles, Calif./Needles) followed with a double for Duffy, who hit a three-run homer to center. The Braves loaded the bases with three singles and senior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) drove in a run with a single through the left side. Sophomore Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion, Ill./Mt. Zion) delivered the big hit of the game with a grand slam to give the Braves a 17-4 advantage.
A Mississippi Valley State error in the top of the fifth led to another Bradley run (18-4) to give BU its highest run total since a 20-0 victory against Jackson State on Feb. 8, 2004. The Braves limited Mississippi Valley State to one hit in the final two frames and picked up their fourth win in the last five outings with the 18-4 victory.
Bradley scored a season-best 18 runs on just 11 hits and drew nine walks in the convincing win. Clemente and Chandler were the only Braves with multi-hit games, both going 2-for-3 at the plate. Clemente drove in three runs and scored twice as she was one of the four BU players to homer and drive in three runs or more. King finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs, while Duffy was 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBI. Huggins drove in four runs with her first career grand slam in her only at bat of the game.
Sophomore Amanda Barna (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) earned her second victory in as many days, giving up four hits and four runs (two earned) in four innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Bradley closes out play at the Razorback Invitational Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. game against tournament-host Arkansas.
