Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - An adventurous first inning gave Omaha all the scoring it needed as the Mavericks (18-13) cruised to a 7-0 win at Bradley (20-15) Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park.
With the win, Omaha head coach Bob Herold earned his 467th career victory with the Mavericks to become the winningest head coach in program history.
For the second straight game, Omaha's starting pitcher baffled Bradley's hitters. After Friday starter Tyler Fox allowed only two hits in 7.0 scoreless innings Friday night, Saturday starter Steven Schoonover (2-1) blanked the Braves on six hits in his 7.0 innings of work. The soft-tossing lefty walked one and struck out three, lowering his season ERA to 0.53 in 27.0 innings. Right-hander Tyler Hamer completed the shutout with 2.0 hitless innings.
The combined effort by the two Omaha pitchers marked just the second time Bradley has been shutout at by a non-conference opponent (April 5, 2006 to UIC) in Dozer Park history. Prior to the 11-0 loss to UIC in 2006, Bradley had not suffered a non-conference home shutout since a 1-0 loss to Saint Francis (Ill.) in the first game of a doubleheader April 19, 1983 and Saturday's defeat was Bradley's first 9-inning, non-conference home shutout loss since a 2-0 setback to Illinois College April 6, 1979 at Meinen Field.
The Mavericks rocked Bradley starter Cameron Roegner (5-3) for five runs on six hits in the first inning, when the Braves also committed three of their four errors on the day.
Sophomore right-hander Eric Scheuermann gave the Braves a chance to rally by holding the Mavericks scoreless over the next 7.0 innings. Scheuermann allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Omaha gained some insurance in the ninth, when the Mavs touched Sean Safko for two runs on three hits.
Bradley shortstop Tyler Leffler collected two of Bradley's six hits, while the first four batters in the Omaha lineup combined to go 9-for-18 with three doubles.
The teams will close out the weekend series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Dozer Park, where the Easter Bunny will make a special appearance during the game.
