Box Score NORMAL, Ill. – Bradley pitchers limited Illinois State to just four hits and senior Marina Groenewegen (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary/Southern Idaho) hit a pair of home runs, but three BU errors and a Redbird grand slam in the fourth helped ISU top the Braves 6-3 Tuesday.
Groenewegen, who extended her hit streak to a career-best six games with a 2-for-3 effort, broke up a scoreless game with a solo homer in the top of the fourth to give Bradley (21-26 overall, 12-9 MVC) a 1-0 lead.
Illinois State (21-24 overall, 13-5 MVC) notched the first of only four hits with one out in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI single by Annie Heineman. The Redbirds loaded the bases with a hit batter for Illinois State pitcher Regan Romshek, who belted a grand slam to put ISU in front 5-1.
The Braves benefitted from an Illinois State error to open the sixth with Groenewegen following with her second home run of the day to trim the Redbird lead to 5-3. The two-run homer was Groenewegen's fifth of the year and she pushed her season RBI total to 25.
Bradley's third error of the game and a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth led to another Illinois State run as the Redbirds held a 6-3 advantage heading to the seventh. Senior Brianne Joseph (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls) had a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but the Braves couldn't advance her to second as Illinois State closed out the victory.
Romshek hit a grand slam for one of the four Redbird hits and also struck out eight and walked just one in the complete game win to even her record at 14-14. Senior Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) suffered the loss for the Braves to drop to 15-13 on the year.
Bradley closes out the home portion of the 2014 schedule with a three-game series against Northern Iowa. The Braves open the weekend series Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Laura Bradley Park.
