DALLAS - With an assist from Bradley's new gargoyle mascot, Kaboom!, Bradley senior guard Walt Lemon, Jr. finished fourth during the Denny's Slam Dunk Contest Thursday night at SMU's Moody Coliseum.
The fifth of eight competitors in the dunk contest to show off his high-flying skills, Lemon positioned Kaboom! with a ball on the block/charge arc inside the lane. After asking judges Mike Modano, Jason Witten, Jason Garrett and Avery Johnson whether he should dunk left-handed or right-handed, Lemon swooped in from the right wing, grabbed the ball out of Kaboom!'s hand and completed the lefty slam to earn the night's first perfect score from the celebrity judges.
Each of the four semifinalts got to score two dunks in the second round, but Lemon failed in two tries to complete a lobbed windmill, settling for a basic two-handed dunk to get on the board with his first attempt. In his second dunk of the semifinals, Lemon cleared out the media and signage from the right baseline, giving him room to approach from the corner for a between-the-legs, lefty hammer. Though the second dunk scored well, the combined score was not enough to reach the 2-man final between Baylor's Corey Jefferson and Eastern Kentucky's Marcus Lewis.
Lewis went on to claim the title by jumping over the event's dunk consultant before a between-the-legs move.
In the other events of the night, local favorite Brady Heslip of Baylor won the men's 3-point shootout, while Louisville's Shoni Schimmel took the women's 3-point shootout title. Schimmel went on to defeat Heslip in a final shootout between the two champions.
