ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- For the second consecutive week, sophomore runner Kristen Busch (Waterloo, Ill./Freeburg) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced by the league office Wednesday, after breaking the school record in the 10,000 meters.
Busch shared Missouri Valley Conference Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week honors earlier this week after her record-setting performance in the 10,000 meters at last week's Stanford Invitational. A week removed from breaking Bradley's school record in the 3,000 meters, Busch shattered the Bradley record in the 10,000 meters and clocked the best time in the Missouri Valley Conference this spring at 33:48.36 at the Stanford Invitational Friday.
Busch, who ran the 10,000 meters for the first time in her career, broke Mary Ellen Hill's 2000 school record of 34:50.62 by over one minute and posted the 11th best 10,000 meter time in the NCAA this season. A health science major, Busch owns a 3.39 cumulative grade point average.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
The Bradley track and field teams are scheduled to be back in action Friday (5 p.m.) at the Illinois Twilight in Champaign, Ill.
