Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - Indiana State got a seeing-eye single from Connor McClain in the 10th inning to keep alive its hopes for a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title, rallying for 4-3 win at Bradley Friday night at Dozer Park.
On the heels of Evansville's 8-1 loss earlier in the day at Missouri State, Indiana State (35-13, 14-6 MVC) moved to within one game of the league-leading Purple Aces (24-18, 15-5 MVC) with only Saturday's regular-season finales across the league remaining. The win did clinch the No. 2 seed for Indiana State, the host school for next week's MVC Baseball Championship and a possible opening-round matchup against Bradley. The Braves (22-25, 4-16 MVC) will be the No. 7 seed with a win Saturday or a Southern Illinois loss at Dallas Baptist, which would create a rematch in the tournament's fourth game Tuesday night at Bob Warn Field.
Bradley starter Steve Adkins continued his impressive return from injury, throwing a career-best 6.0 innings and allowing only an unearned run on three singles, lowering his ERA to 1.82 in his fifth appearance of the season. Thanks in part to a pair of RBI singles from Max Murphy, Adkins was in position for the win, holding a 3-1 lead when he gave way to Eric Scheuermann to start the 7th.
After giving up a 1-out single to McClain, Scheuermann and the Braves had a chance to get out of the seventh unscathed when Derek Hannahs hit a ground ball to second baseman Chris Godinez. Godinez's throw to second to start an inning-ending double play pulled shortstop Tyler Leffler off the bag, however, and Jacob Hayes made the Braves pay with a tying 2-run single later in the inning.
In Bradley's first extra-innings home game of the season, Tyler Wampler drew a one-out walk in the 10th and promptly stole second. After a Jeff Zahn ground out moved Wampler to third, McClain hit a ground ball into the hole between first and second, just out of the reach of a diving Godinez, to plate the go-ahead run.
Bradley tried to rally in the home half against Sycamores closer Ryan Keaffaber. Godinez drew a 1-out walk and Murphy beat out a ground ball to short to put runners at first and second with two outs. Keaffaber got designated hitter Greg Parytka to ground out to first to end the game.
