Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley rallied from behind to take the opening set of its home opener 28-26 from Miami (Ohio), but the Redhawks recovered to take the next three sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 and top the Braves to wrap up day one of the CEFCU Classic Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.
Freshman Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) had a season-best 13 kills to lead four Bradley players in double figures in the first home match of her Bradley career. Sophomore Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) added 11 kills of her own, while senior Madison Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) matched a career-best with 10 kills in the loss.
Miami (5-2 overall) hit .283 in the opening stanza and held set point at 24-22 before Bradley (0-8 overall) rallied to pull out a 28-26 win. Kills by Livaudais and fellow freshman Afton Sobasky (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) tied things up at 24-24 and the Braves held set point (25-24) after a Jessica Teel (San Antonio, Texas/Claudia Taylor Johnson) ace. With the score later knotted at 26-26, Kamp found the floor with a kill and Livaudais, who had five kills in the first set, sealed the 28-26 Bradley win with an ace.
Both teams had their worst offensive set in the second, but the Braves rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to hold a 13-12 advantage midway through the frame. Three consecutive BU attack errors fueled a 5-0 Miami run which put the Redhawks ahead 17-13. Miami closed the set just like it started with a 6-1 spurt and pulled even in the match with a 25-16 victory.
Just like the second set, Bradley led 13-12 midway through, before a 5-1 Miami run gave the Redhawks a 17-14 edge. Miami hit .312 in the third set and went on take the set 25-19.
Bradley was within striking distance at 16-15 in the fourth set after a Cave kill, but Miami used a 9-3 spurt to close out a 25-18 win and take the match in four sets. Paige Hill, who finished with a match-high 16 kills and hit .667 for Miami, tallied seven kills on just 10 swings for the Redhawks in the fourth set.
Junior Lea Sack (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) led Bradley's defensive effort with a season-best 20 digs, while freshman Taylor Theile (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) collected a season-high 17 digs.
Earlier in the day, UMKC defeated North Dakota State 25-17, 24-26, 12-25, 25-22, 15-11 in the opener of the CEFCU Classic.
The CEFCU Classic continues Saturday with Miami (Ohio) taking on North Dakota State at 10 a.m., followed by Bradley squaring off with UMKC at noon. UMKC and Miami (Ohio) play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum and the tournament concludes with a 7 p.m. match between North Dakota State and Bradley.
