Box Score PEORIA, IL - Bradley started five freshmen from five different countries, but the new-look Braves were in sync from the start in their exhibition opener Wednesday night at Carver Arena, handling NCAA Division III Edgewood College, 78-42.
Freshman center Callum Barker led all players in scoring and rebounding with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding a game-high two blocked shots in his 24 minutes. Freshman guard Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye enjoyed a solid all-around game with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot and freshman guard Ronnie Suggs chipped in with 10 points for the Braves. Of the 11 Bradley players to see action, 10 scored and they all grabbed at least one rebound.
Of the 16 Edgewood players to see action, only guard Adam Freitag scored in double-figures, finishing with 10 points. The Eagles shot just 22.0 percent (13-59) from the field, which would rank as the fourth lowest field goal percentage on record by a Bradley opponent if not for an exhibition contest. Edgewood made only 5-of-28 (.179) 2-point field goal attempts and did not score from inside the 3-point arc, field goal or free throw, until 19:02 left in the game.
Bradley shot 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field, outrebounded the Eagles by a 52-34 count and made off with 11 steals among Edgewood's 18 turnovers.
The Braves opened the game by scoring the first six points by sandwiching two paint baskets by Lautier-Ogunleye around a Barker jumper and stretched their early advantage to 21-6 on another Lautier-Ogunleye interior bucket with 9:22 left.
The Eagles scored nine straight points on a trio of 3-pointers to slice their deficit to 21-15, but Bradley closed the half on a 14-3 surge and never looked back.
After outscoring Edgewood 24-0 in the paint during the first half, Bradley began the second half by scoring in threes: treys by Suggs and Lautier-Ogunleye, coupled with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Luuk van Bree, gave the Braves a 44-20 lead with 18:18 left. Bradley built its lead to 30 points, 52-22, on a Scottie James basket with 14:48 left and led by at least 30 the rest of the way.
The Braves will play their second preseason exhibition game Monday night when they host NCAA Division II St. Joseph's (IN) College in a 7 p.m. contest at Carver Arena. Monday's outing is included in Bradley's 17-game season-ticket package. It also is available as part of several multiple-game mini packages: Opening Act Pack, Pick 5 Plan and Marquee 3.
