Box Score LAKE CHARLES, La. - Two games into its weekend series at McNeese State, Bradley's pitching has yet to allow a run. A day after opening the series with a 1-hitter in Friday's 5-0 win against the host Cowboys (4-3), three Bradley pitchers combined on a 5-hit shutout for a 1-0 victory Saturday at Cowboys Diamond.
Steve Adkins (1-0) allowed four hits in 6.0 innings, Cameron Roegner allowed one hit in 1.2 innings and Matt Dennis got the final four outs to close out his second straight game.
The Braves got all the offense they needed in the second inning when first baseman Paul Solka led off with a single, took second on a Carson Weber sacrifice bunt, third on a Zach Fairchild ground ball and scored on a passed ball.
Adkins faced early trouble in the first and second innings, but worked out of both jams. The Cowboys used a 2-out rally in the first to put runners at second and third with two outs, but Adkins got a strikeout to end the threat. The junior righthander got some help from his catcher, Fairchild, in the second. With runners at first and second with one out, Fairchild picked off the lead runner at second. After a walk again put runners at first and second, Adkins got a fly out to end the inning.
The only other time the Cowboys got a runner to second base in the first seven innings, Adkins picked off that runner in the fifth inning.
Kingsley took the loss for McNeese State, despite allowing the one unearned run on four hits in 7.0 innings. Kingsley struck out eight and walked two.
Bradley earned its first 1-0 victory since opening a 3-game home series versus Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois with a 1-0 win May 1, 2009. The Braves had not delivered consecutive shutout wins since 2006: April 16 at Illinois State (4-0) and April 18 at home versus Saint Francis, Ill. (3-0). Bradley had not blanked consecutive NCAA Division I opponents since 1993, a three-game streak March 18 against Princeton (11-0) and at Texas-Pan American (1-0), followed by a 1-0 no-hitter March 17 versus Miami-Ohio. Bradley had not blanked the same opponent in a multiple-game series since winning games one (4-0) and three (3-0) against #27 Creighton March 24 and March 26, 2006 and had not posted consecutive shutouts against the same opponent since taking the middle two games in a 4-game home set against Southern Illinois April 6-7, 1991.
Bradley's pitching staff will take a 19.1 scoreless innings streak into Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale at McNeese State.
