Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - Illinois State scored seven runs with two outs during a 9-run sixth inning and the visiting Redbirds (26-23, 8-10 MVC) went on to finish a 13-4 win against Bradley (32-15, 10-8 MVC) Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.
After Bradley took Saturday's series opener, 7-3, the Redbirds rallied to take the final two games to complete their eighth consecutive series win against their Interstate 74 rivals. Each of Bradley's seven pitchers Sunday issued at least one walk as the Braves set the Dozer Park stadium record by issuing 12 free passes in all.
Steve Heilenbach (2-2) settled down after hitting Bradley's first two hitters of the game and earned the win by limiting the Braves to two first-inning runs and five hits in his 5.0 innings of work. After pitching an inning of scoreless relief in Saturday's doubleheader opener, Bradley lefty David Koll (3-1) took the loss in a starting role Sunday. Koll allowed three runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
Bradley faced just a 4-2 deficit heading into the sixth inning, but the Redbirds broke the game open by scoring nine runs on four hits with six walks and an error in the 46-minute half inning. The Braves used five pitchers in the sixth inning and all of them issued at least one walk, including a stretch of four straight walks from three of those pitchers to plate three runs in front of Paul DeJong's 3-run double.
The Braves head to league-leading Missouri State for the final three games of the regular season. Bradley will enter the series alone in third place in The Valley, but with the ability to finish anywhere from tied for second to alone in fifth in the final standings. While Bradley is playing at #13 Missouri State Thursday, Friday and Saturday, second-place #11 Dallas Baptist (13-5 MVC) will be hosting fourth-place Wichita State (9-9) and fifth-place Illinois State (8-10) will be hosting seventh-place Indiana State (6-12).
