PEORIA, Ill. - The Bradley Tennis program added a third player to its 2015 recruiting class with the news Alejandra de Lasa will transfer from VCU, according to an announcement Monday from Braves head coach Matt Tyler.
A native of Lima, Peru, de Lasa posted an 8-4 singles record during her freshman season at VCU in 2014-15 and comes to Bradley as a sophomore with three years of remaining eligibility. She joins a recruiting class that includes freshmen Malini Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley H.S.) and Emma Sodergren (Sollentuna, Sweden).
"I am so excited to have Alejandra become a part of our tennis family," said Tyler. "She had a great freshman year at VCU and I expect her career at Bradley to be equally as impressive. "Throughout he junior and collegiate careers, she has demonstrated hard work on and off the tennis court. Her energy is contagious and I believe she is going to add not only to our tennis level, but also the outstanding team culture we have worked hard to establish."
As a junior player, de Lasa climbed to as high as No. 337 in the International Tennis Federation world rankings.
Led by a quartet of underclassmen, Bradley finished the 2013-14 season with an 11-13 overall record, achieving double-digit wins for the first time since 1992-93 (14-7). The Braves also knocked off Missouri State for its first Missouri Valley Conference win since 2008, then added a win against Illinois State for multiple Valley wins for the first time since 1993-94 (2-3).
Sophomore Ariel Dechter became the first-ever Bradley women's tennis player to earn All-MVC honors after shattering the school single-season records for singles wins (29) and combined singles and doubles victories (47). Freshmen Aimee Manfredo (23) and Alexa Brandt (22), as well as sophomore Ashley Thai (21), all eclipsed the previous school single-season wins record and followed Dechter with the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 all-time season combined win totals.
