Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Jessica Teel (San Antonio, Texas/Claudia Taylor Johnson) served up three of her career-best six aces in the fifth set and had four in the final two frames to help Bradley rally for a 25-20, 26-28, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12 victory against Manhattan to conclude the CEFCU Classic Saturday night at Renaissance Coliseum.
Teel's six aces matched a Renaissance Coliseum record and were the most by a Bradley player since Lindsay Stalzer had six aces against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 6, 2003. In addition to her six aces, Teel had three kills, 25 assists and eight digs to help highlight the victory.
Three Bradley players reached double figures in kills led by CEFCU Classic All-Tournament selections Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) and Allison Turner (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), who finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Turner highlighted a 25-20 opening set victory for the Braves with eight of her 13 kills coming in the first frame as she attacked at a .429 clip in the win.
The second set featured five lead changes and 12 ties with both teams having chances to take the stanza. A Haslag kill pulled Bradley even at 26-26, but Manhattan's Syndey Volovski put the Jaspers ahead 27-26 with a kill and Alyssa Rehrer followed with an ace to seal a 28-26 Manhattan win.
The third set also came down to the wire with the squads knotted at 22-22 and again at 23-23. All-Tournament pick Milena Janjusevic notched seven of Manhattan's third-set kills and had back-to-back kills to break the 23-23 tie and give the Jaspers a 25-23 victory.
Bradley took control early in the fourth set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead behind four kills by Haslag. The Braves hit .370 in the set and took the frame 25-15 to force a deciding fifth set. Haslag had five kills in the fourth.
Manhattan held a 6-4 lead in the fifth, before a 7-0 Bradley run gave the Braves control. Sophomore Taylor Thiele (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) opened the decisive run with a kill and a Teel ace tied the score at 6-6. Another Thiele kill put Bradley in front 7-6 and Haslag added back-to-back kills of her own to make it 9-6 in favor of Bradley. Teel capped the spurt with back-to-back aces as the Braves built an 11-6 advantage.
The Jaspers cut the Bradley lead to two at 13-11, but a Turner kill gave Bradley match point and sophomore Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) followed a Manhattan point with her 10th kill of the night as the Braves took the set 15-12.
Bradley (5-1 overall) matched its best start since 2013 and finished with season highs of 12 aces, 90 digs and 14.0 blocks. The 14 blocks were the most by the Braves since Oct. 15, 2011 (at Drake) and the 12 aces is the team's best total since exactly six years to the date (12 vs. Coppin State on Sept. 5, 2009).
Sophomore Afton Sobasky (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) picked up her team-best fourth double-double of the year with 24 assists and 11 digs. Senior Lea Sack (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) had 25 digs, eight assists and four aces to also help highlight the win.
Janjusevic hit .358 and tallied a match-high 22 kills along with 18 digs and three aces to pace Manhattan.
Earlier in the afternoon, Weber State swept Manhattan to claim the CEFCU Classic Tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record. Bradley took second with a 2-1 mark. Joining the Bradley duo of Haslag and Turner on the CEFCU Classic All-Tournament team were Manhattan's Janjusevic, UMASS Lowell's Lindsey Visbardis and the Weber State trio of Megan Thompson (MVP), Thamires Cavalcanti and Tanisha Langston.
The Braves return to action Friday, opening play at the Kangaroo Klassic in Kansas City, Mo., against tournament-host UMKC at 1:30 p.m.
