Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Northern Iowa used a balanced attack, paced by a match-high 13 kills from Kayla Haneline to top Bradley in three sets 25-16, 25-15, 25-21 Friday at Renaissance Coliseum in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action.

The Panthers had four players reach double figures in digs and slowed down the Bradley offense by tallying a 62-47 advantage in digs.  Senior Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) collected a team-best nine kills to lead Bradley in the setback, while sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) added eight kills and eight digs.

Cave had three kills in the opening set and pulled Bradley within a point at 15-14 with a kill midway through the frame.  Northern Iowa, which hit .333 in the first set, answered with five consecutive points and took a 20-14 lead on an Amie Held ace.  Cave stopped the run with another kill, but the Panthers went on take the opener 25-16 behind five kills from Bri Weber.

Bradley jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set to force an early Panther timeout.  UNI countered with an 8-2 push that included back-to-back Haneline kills as Northern Iowa took a 10-8 advantage.  Cave had four kills on four swings in the second and pulled the Braves within one at 14-13.  Held took over down the stretch, however, notching back-to-back kills and recorded six of UNI's final 11 points on kills to power the Panthers to a 25-15 win.

The third set was close throughout, but Bradley had to battle back from a five-point deficit (20-15).  Haslag sandwiched a pair of kills around a UNI attack error to cut the deficit to two (20-18).  Back-to-back Haneline kills gave the Panthers a four-point edge (22-18) and the Braves once again pulled within two on a pair of Northern Iowa errors.  UNI held set point at 24-20 after kills by Heather Hook and Held and the Panthers completed the sweep by taking the third set 25-21.

Haslag pushed her career kill total over 500 with her eight kills Friday against Northern Iowa and is the second fastest player in program history to reach the mark (47 matches) behind Bradley Hall of Fame member Jenny Pavlas (46 matches).

Sophomore Abby Ihrke (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) collected a team-best 15 digs in the loss to help lead the Braves, while Cave opened the night with seven kills on her first 13 attempts and boasted a .333 attack percentage to go with her nine kills.

Haneline was one of three UNI players to reach double figures in kills, notching 13 kills while hitting at a .579 clip.  Hook had 41 assists and 10 digs and was one of three Panthers to turn in double-doubles.

Bradley closes out a two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against Drake at Renaissance Coliseum.  Head coach Carol Price-Torok will deliver a pre-match "Chalk Talk" at 6:15 p.m. in the Zobrist Room for all fans in attendance as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
