Braves Down Indiana State In Four

Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Rachel Jones (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) collected a season-best 12 kills and hit at a .500 clip to help lead Bradley Volleyball to a 26-24, 25-19, 13-25, 25-18 victory over visiting Indiana State Saturday at Renaissance Coliseum.

The win give the Braves their highest overall win total since 2013 and Bradley has its most Missouri Valley Conference victories since the 2014 campaign.

After missing the last two seasons, Jones turned in her highest kill total since collecting a career-best 23 kills against Indiana State in the first home match of her Bradley career back on Oct. 4, 2013.  In four career matches against the Sycamores, she has averaged 3.00 kills per set while hitting .473.

Jones also added four block assists and hit .500 to help lead the Braves offensively as she was one of four BU players to reach double figures in kills.  Junior Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) led Bradley with 14 kills, while senior Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) added 11 kills and junior Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) chipped in with 10 kills of her own.

The first set went back-and-forth with two lead changes and 10 ties.  Jones had four kills on six swings in the opener and gave Bradley set point at 24-22 with her fourth kill of the frame.  Kynedi Nalls answered with back-to-back kills of her own to pull Indiana State even in the set at 24-24.  A Sycamore service error made it 25-24 in favor of BU and an Indiana State attack error gave the Braves the first set 26-24.

Jones was even more efficient in the second set, tallying four kills on five attempts and helped Bradley hit .364 in the stanza.  Livaudais had a pair of kills and freshman Brittany Lownds (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) served up one of Bradley's five aces of the night to highlight a 7-0 run which put the Braves ahead 12-5.  Indiana State got no closer than four points down the stretch as Bradley took the second set 25-19.

Indiana State didn't commit an attack error in the third, hitting .615 in the set behind five kills from Damadj Johnson.  The Sycamores took control of the third set midway through with an 11-1 run, which included three kills and a block from Johnson.  Indiana State claimed the third set 25-13 to avoid the sweep.

In the fourth, Livaudais broke a 17-17 tie with a kill and the Braves later took a 20-18 lead on a kill by junior Taylor Thiele (Aurora, Neb./Aurora).  Jones and Haslag combined for a block to make it a three-point advantage (21-18) and Haslag followed with her fourth kill of the set.  With Bradley leading 23-18 after an Indiana State ball handling error, Jones and Thiele had a block to give the Braves match point at 24-18.  Another Sycamore ball handling error closed out a 25-18 Bradley win as the Braves snapped a five-match losing streak in the series with Indiana State.

Sophomore Abby Ihrke (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was one of three Braves to reach double figures in digs with a match-high 23, while Lownds added a season-best 13 digs.

Bradley will try to complete a regular-season sweep of the series with Evansville when the Braves take on the Purple Aces Friday at 7 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
