Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Bradley scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to erase what was at one point a 16-point deficit and grabbed a 54-50 lead with 3:46 to play, but Butler's Tori Schickel made a layup with 0.3 seconds left as the Bulldogs edged the Braves 58-56 Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Junior Madison Dellamuth, who scored a total of nine points during the 2015-16 season, came off the bench to help spark the Bradley rally with a career-best 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  Senior Leti Lerma joined her in double figures with 14 points.

Bradley got off to a sluggish start, making just one field goal in the first quarter and trailed 18-2 after the opening 10 minutes.

Dellamuth entered the game for the first time early in the second quarter and sparked a 9-0 Bradley run with a three-pointer.  The Braves pulled within seven points several times during the second period, but a late Butler push gave the Bulldogs a 31-20 halftime lead.

Butler extended the lead back to 16 points (44-28) nearing the midway point of the third quarter and Bradley trailed 48-33 heading to the final minutes of the frame.  Lerma split a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left in the period and Dellamuth beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter with a baseline jumper as the Braves cut the Butler lead to 12 (48-36) heading to the fourth.

Dellamuth knocked down another jumper in the first minute of the fourth quarter and freshman Chelsea Brackmann had a three-point play after a Butler turnover to cut the deficit to seven.  Dellamuth's third three-pointer of the contest cut it to four (48-44) with 7:36 left as the Braves pulled within two possessions for the first time since midway through the first quarter.

Bradley forced a shot clock violation and a 10-second backcourt call on Butler's next two possessions, with Lerma hitting a jumper in the lane to trim the Butler advantage to two.  After a Butler miss, a Brackmann layup tied the game at 48-48 and Lerma gave the Braves their first lead of the day (50-48) with a layup nearing the five-minute mark to cap an impressive 17-0 Bradley run which included the first 14 points of the fourth quarter.

Bradley led 54-50 following a Ryan Wilkins steal and layup with just under four minutes left, but it was the final hoop of the contest for the Braves.  Butler got a pair of free throws from Michelle Weaver with 3:14 on the clock and Bradley missed a pair of free throws the next trip down the floor.

The Bulldogs went inside to Schickel on the ensuing possession and her layup tied the game at 54-54.  Schickel followed a Bradley turnover with another layup to give Butler a 56-54 lead with 1:34 left.

A pair of Dellamuth free throws with 26 seconds tied the game for the fourth time (56-56), but the Bulldogs once again went inside to Schickel for the final play and her layup with 0.3 seconds left gave Butler the 58-56 victory.

After a 1-for-15 start from the field, Bradley made 18 of its last 38 shots, starting with Dellamuth's first basket of the afternoon.  She made three of six three-point attempts and also added two assists and a steal in 24 minutes.

Schickel led Butler with 21 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals to pace four Bulldogs in double figures.  Kristen Spolyar and Shae Brey each added 11 points.

Bradley opens a season-long five-game home stand Friday, hosting Detroit in a special 11 a.m. game for Field Trip day at Renaissance Coliseum.
