Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Estero, Fla. – Rookie Darrell Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) tallied a Bradley freshman record with 34 points but Deron Powers scored with just 0.5 seconds remaining to lift Hofstra to a 92-90 victory over the Bradley men's basketball team in the Gulf Coast Showcase quarterfinals on Monday afternoon. The Braves are now 2-2 on the season, while the Pride also move to 2-2.

Brown set the program's record thanks to a 13-of-18 day from the field, while making 5-of-7 3-point attempts and 3-of-4 free throws. The rookie's 34 points are also the most by any Brave in 14 seasons.

Junior transfer JoJo McGlaston (Dublin, Calif.) also chipped in 14 points – his fourth-straight game with double digits, while another rookie, Koch Bar (Abyei, South Sudan), also put up 11 points (making all five of his field goals) to go with a team-best six rebounds.

After the Pride grabbed an early 11-3 advantage in the contest, the Braves slowly eased their way into the game and took the lead with just under six minutes remaining. A 10-3 run tied the score for the first time, 26-26, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, capped by a 3-pointer from freshman Nate Kennell (Metamora, Ill.). After Hofstra reclaimed a four-point advantage, 32-28, the Braves scored six-straight for their first lead of the contest. Bradley would stretch its edge to as many as six points before a late three by the Pride sent the teams into the intermission with the Braves ahead, 46-43.

Bradley connected on 63.0 percent of its shots in the first half (17-of-27), including 5-of-9 3-point attempts.

In the second stanza, the Braves stretched their advantage to seven points early only to see Hofstra respond with a 13-5 run of its own to reclaim its early lead. The Pride's advantage in the second half reached as many as seven points, 72-65, with 9:11 remaining before Brown capped a 12-2 Bradley stretch with his third 3-pointer of the game for a 77-74 advantage with 6:02 left in regulation. Six-straight points, however, by Hofstra put the Pride back in front and the team led by as many as four points with under a minute remaining.

Brown then saved his best for last, though, with the game on the line. With Bradley trailing by four, 88-84, the rookie nailed a step-back 3-pointer with 29.3 seconds remaining to pull the Braves within one. After two successful three throws by Hofstra, Brown then sunk his fifth 3-pointer of the day as Bradley drew even, 90-90, with just 7.4 ticks left.

After a Hofstra time, however, Powers took the ball and drove to the rim, scoring a layup with just 0.5 seconds remaining. Bradley's final attempt saw its shot hit the front of the rim as the Pride prevailed in the end, 92-90.

The Braves finished with their best shooting contest in five seasons, connecting on 60.0 percent of their shots (33-of-55) and 60 percent of their 3-points attempts (12-of-20).

Hofstra made 42.4 percent of its attempts but held a 25-12 advantage in free throws made on the day. Powers finished with a team-high 19 points, including the winning shot with under a second left.

The Braves continue the Gulf Coast Showcase tomorrow morning with a matchup against Wofford at 10 a.m. CT.
