Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run triple in the sixth and freshman Megan Mahaffy (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn her first career victory as the Braves rallied to top Boise State 4-2 Saturday morning at the Kajikawa Classic.
Bradley (1-2 overall) struck for the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first with senior Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) driving in Kelly Kapp (Freeburg, Ill./Gibault Catholic) with a triple to left to give the Braves an early 1-0 lead. Kapp led off the inning with an infield single and stole second, before Duffy drove her home with the triple.
Boise State (0-5 overall) left five runners on base in the first three innings before plating two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Corey Hendrickson followed up an infield single and Bradley error to open the inning with a RBI double to left center. The Broncos grabbed a 2-1 lead, scoring a run on a two-out, infield single by Kora Wade.
The Braves loaded the bases with no outs to start the bottom of the fourth, but a foul out and back-to-back strikeouts got Boise State out of the jam and Bradley stranded a runner at third in the fifth.
Mahaffy took over in the circle for junior Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) after a walk to open the sixth and retired the first five hitters she faced as Bradley trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Taylor Morales (Spokane, Wis./University) drew one of her two walks in the game to lead off the Bradley half of the sixth and the Braves had runners at first and second with one out after a Duffy single. Clemente delivered the big hit of the day with a two-run triple to right center as Bradley grabbed a 3-2 lead.
Clemente later scored on a Boise State error later in the inning and Mahaffy worked around a two-out walk in the top of the seventh to close out the 4-2 victory for the Braves. Hull struck out six in five innings of work in the no decision.
Jena Bassler took the loss for Boise State in relief to drop to 0-3 on the year.
Kapp, Duffy and Clemente combined for six of Bradley's seven hits in the game, going 6-for-11 with four runs and three RBI at the top of the lineup for the Braves.
Bradley will play again later today at the Kajikawa Classic, taking on Utah State at 3 p.m. (CST) in Tempe, Ariz.
