Box Score Bradley 9, at Butler 5
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Bradley first baseman Paul Solka banged out four hits for the second time in three days and center fielder Andy Shadid extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 3-hit effort, leading the Braves (11-9) to a 9-5 win at Butler (7-15) Sunday afternoon at Butler Park.
Bradley scored eight runs in the first two innings as the Braves reached base 11 times in 14 plate appearances after their first two hitters made outs. Solka plated Bradley's first run by driving home Tyler Leffler with a first-inning single to start a 5-run outburst. Bradley's first baseman added a 2-run double in the second inning and a leadoff triple in the fourth before he singled and scored in the sixth.
Shadid extended his hitting streak with a 2-run double in the first and he added another RBI double in the sixth. Leffler and catcher Zach Fairchild both went 2-for-5 as part of Bradley's 15-hit attack.
Freshman RHP Ben Cilano (W, 1-0) earned his first career win by working 3.2 effective innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter Drew Peters, who walked all four batters he faced. Cilano gave up a sacifice fly and a RBI groundout after replacing Peters, then retired eight straight Butler hitters after giving up a 2-out walk in the first. He ended up allowing one run on three hits.
Senior LHP Brent Stong struck out four in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in the middle of the game and freshman LHP Jacob Hurst also contributed 2.0 innings of scoreless work out of the pen. Freshman RHP Andrew Hill made his collegiate debut to start the ninth inning and allowed one run despite retiring the final three batters after surrendering a leadoff walk.
Bradley will play its 21st game away from home to start the season Wednesday when the Braves visit Saint Louis, before opening the 2016 home schedule Friday (6 p.m.) against MacMurray at Dozer Park.
