Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. – Senior Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion, Ill./Mt. Zion) belted a pair of three-run homers to break the Bradley season home run record and Bradley tallied five dingers on the day, but Wichita State rallied to pull out 8-7 and 11-10 victories over the Braves Saturday afternoon.
Huggins hit a pair of homers in the day's second game, highlighting a four-run first inning with a three-run shot and adding another three-run homer in the top of the fourth to give Bradley a 7-2 lead. The two homers pushed her conference-leading season home run total to 11 as she broke Alycia Bachkora's school season home run mark of 10 set in 2009.
Wichita State answered with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, however, to go in front 11-7. A bases loaded sacrifice fly opened the scoring and two more runs came in on a two-out double by Macklin Hitz. Two walks loaded the bases for Liz Broyles, who drove in a run with a single and Ashley Johnson followed with a two-run double. Laurie Ann Derrico capped the inning with a three-run homer to give the Shockers an 11-7 lead.
Bradley added a run on a bases loaded groundout off the bat of sophomore Elizabeth Leonard (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) in the top of the fifth and cut it to two runs (11-9) on a RBI single by Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) later in the frame.
Neither team was able to take advantage of bases loaded situations in the sixth, before Bradley tried to rally in the seventh. Back-to-back two-out singles by Hansen and senior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) got things started and Huggins drove in her seventh run of the game with a single to center. Wichita State hurler Jenni Brooks stuck out the next batter she faced to close out the 11-10 Shocker victory as she earned her third save of the year.
In the day's opening contest, Bradley used a six-run sixth to take a 7-3 lead before Wichita State rallied to pull out the victory. Freshman Katie Habryle (Covington, Wash./Kentlake) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning.
The Shockers grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a bases loaded wild pitch and a two-out single.
Leonard led off a six-run sixth for Bradley with a double and came around to score two batters later on a Clemente double. Sophomore Maria Schroeder (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) belted a grand slam to center to give the Braves a 6-3 advantage and Habryle ripped her second home run of the game with a one-out, solo shot as Bradley led 7-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Wichita State answered with four run in the bottom half of the inning to pull even at 7-7, however. The Shockers loaded the bases on a one-out error and back-to-back singles for Johnson, who had a base-clearing double to make it a one-run game. Johnson later scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 7-7.
Bradley opened the top of the seventh with a double and walk, but was unable to push a run across. A pair of walks sandwiched around a single in the Wichita State half of the seventh loaded the bases and Broyles drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single as the Shockers rallied to take the opener 8-7.
Habryle was 5-for-7 with two homers and three RBI on the day, while Hansen tallied six hits in eight at bats. Huggins was 4-for-5 with two homers and seven RBI in the day's second contest as she helped Bradley tie a season-high with 17 hits in the nightcap.
Bradley and Wichita State will close out the three-game series Sunday with a single game at noon.
