Box Score at Bradley 12, Robert Morris-Springfield 0
PEORIA, IL - Six Bradley pitchers combined on the program's first no-hitter since 1993 and the Braves (21-16) banged out 16 hits in a 12-0, 8-inning victory against Robert Morris-Springfield Tuesday afternoon at Dozer Park.
The no-hitter was Bradley's first since Brent Walker blanked Miami (OH) in a 1-0 victory March 17, 1993 in Edinburg, TX and was the sixth by any team in Dozer Park's 15-year history, following five no-no's in Midwest League games involving the stadium's co-tenant Peoria Chiefs.
Freshman RHP Mitch Janssen earned the win as the starter, recording the first two of the staff's 12 strikeouts. Jacob Hurst (2.0 IP), Peter Resnick (1.0), Ben Cilano (1.0), Matthew Richey (1.0) and Drew Peters (1.0) followed in the staff effort. Not only did the five relievers complete the no-hitter, they also extended the bullpen's streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 22.1 innings and hitless streak to 14.2 innings.
Among Tuesday's additional highlights, junior 3B Spencer Gaa was 3-for-4 with a double, a sacrifice fly and a 7th-inning home run that triggered Bradley's Chick-fil-A promotion: the Sterling Avenue restaurant in Peoria will serve a FREE Original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich with any purchase Wednesday after the Braves scored in the seventh inning. Gaa also made a "web-gem" at third base with one out in the top of the sixth to help preserve the no-hitter, making a diving stop toward the line, rolling over and getting up to make the long throw across the diamond. Similarly, starting LF Evan Gruener made a diving catch in shallow left centerfield for the game's second out.
Luke Mangieri was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored; the shortstop combo of Tyler Leffler (2-for-2, RBI, two runs) and Nick Green (2-2) were 4-for-4; and 1B Paul Solka drove in four runs with a 3-run double and a sacrifice fly.
Bradley, which completed a 4-1 home stand, will return to action this weekend by visiting I-74 rival Illinois State for a 3-game Missouri Valley Conference series in Normal. Game times are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday's 1 p.m. game will be televised by RedbirdHD.tv on ESPN3.
