Western Michigan Tops Bradley Volleyball In Four

Game Recap: Volleyball |
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Bradley Volleyball got off to another good start, winning the first set 25-21 and sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) reached 20 kills for the second straight outing, but Western Michigan bounced back to take the next three sets 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 and top the Braves in four sets Saturday morning at the Indiana State Tournament.

Haslag followed up a season-high 21-kill effort Friday night in the MVC opener against Indiana State with 20 kills Saturday against Western Michigan in the final non-conference match of the year for Bradley (5-7 overall).  The last player to collect 20 or more kills in consecutive contests was Nikki Pierzchala in October 2007.

Junior Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) joined Haslag in double figures with a season-best 12 kills.

In the opening set, Bradley held a slim 22-21 advantage when Livaudais came up with back-to-back kills to give the Braves set point (24-21) and a Western Michigan (4-8 overall) attack error closed out a 25-21 first set win for BU.  The Braves have now claimed the first set in nine of 12 outings in 2016.

Bradley hit .300 as a team in the second set and Haslag slammed seven of her match-high 20 kills in the frame.  Western Michigan countered with a .394 hitting percentage of its own and Mikaela Ryshytytlo pounded nine kills to help the Broncos pull even in the match with a 25-18 win.  The teams were knotted at 16-16 before Ryshytytlo had three kills during a 9-3 Western Michigan spurt to finish the frame.

Back-to-back blocks midway through the third set helped Western Michigan take control of the stanza as the Broncos went in front 17-11.  Western Michigan forced 10 Bradley attack errors en route to a 25-15 win.

The Braves weren't able to keep pace with Western Michigan in the fourth set as the Broncos hit a blistering .556 in the frame.  Three Kate Carey kills highlighted a 5-0 Western Michigan run, which put the Broncos in front 18-7 as Bradley eventually fell 25-13.  Carey had five kills on seven swings in the fourth to highlight the Western Michigan attack.

Bradley closes out a stretch of 13 consecutive road or neutral site contests to open the 2016 season next Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at I-74 rival Illinois State.
