Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) turned in her team-best fourth double-double of the year and freshman Erin Olson (Cary, Ill./Car-Grove) collected 25 assists and season-high 22 digs, but I-74 rival Illinois State topped Bradley 25-20, 25-17, 29-27 Saturday at Redbird Arena.

The Braves (5-8 overall, 0-2 MVC) fought off five match points in the third set, before Illinois State (10-5 overall, 3-0 MVC) was able to close out the contest with a 29-27 victory.  Haslag had five of her team-best 12 kills in the third set and also added seven digs.  Olson, who had her second double-double of the year, added one kill and 10 digs in the third.

After falling behind by as many as six in the opening set (16-10), sophomore Allison Turner (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) had a pair of kills and junior Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) added a kill and block during a 6-1 Bradley spurt which cut the Illinois State lead to one at 17-16.  Aly Dawson added two of her eight first-set kills during a 5-1 spurt to help power the Redbirds to a 25-20 opening-set win.

In the second set, Bradley trailed 20-17 after Haslag had a kill and block.  Dawson pushed the lead to four, however, with one of her match-high 19 kills and Jordan Weaterhless served up back-to-back aces as Illinois State went on to take the second set 25-17.  Haslag had six kills with no hitting errors and five digs in the second.

The third set went back and forth, with 18 ties and six lead changes.  Bradley led 16-15 after a Turner block, but the Braves later found themselves training 21-19.  A Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) kill fought off the first set point and an ISU attack error pulled the Braves even at 24-24.

Illinois State went back in front 25-24 on a Jaelyn Keene kill and Haslag answered with her 12th kill of the night to tie it again at 25-25.  The teams traded points once again on a Keene kill and Illinois State error.  Dawson's 18th kill of the night put the put the Redbirds back on top 27-26 only to have Livaudais tie it again 27-27 with a kill.  Bradley's rally attempt ended there, however, with Dawson closing out the match with a kill and ace as the Redbirds took the set 29-27.

Haslag led the Braves offensive attack with 12 kills and also collected 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.  Olson had 25 assists and a season-high 22 digs in the loss for Bradley.

After playing 13 matches away from home to open the 2016 season, the Braves will play their 2016 home opener Friday against Southern Illinois in a 7 p.m. match at Renaissance Coliseum.
