Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) had nine kills and hit at a .333 clip, but Southern Illinois tallied 12 blocks and had just nine hitting errors as the Salukis pulled out a 25-17, 25-21, 25-11 victory to spoil the 2016 home opener for Bradley Volleyball Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

After a slow start offensively, Cave collected four kills in both the second and third sets to help highlight the offensive attack for Bradley (5-9 overall, 0-3 MVC) as she finished with a team-best nine kills.  Junior Jamie Livaudais (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) added eight kills of her own, notching five of the 11 first-set kills for the Braves on just eight swings.

Southern Illinois (12-5 overall, 4-0 MVC) hit .400 as a team in the first set and .330 for the match.  Andrea Estrada helped power the Salukis to a 25-17 opening-set victory with six kills and seven digs in the opening frame.  Three Estrada kills helped SIU build a 20-14 advantage and Southern Illinois closed out the first set with a kill by Abby Barrow and solo block by Alex Rosignol.

The second set went back and forth with the lead changing hands three times to go with 13 ties.  Bradley led 17-15 on a Cave kill and it was a 19-18 advantage for the Braves on a Kathryn Graf (Edina, Minn./Edina) kill.  Barrow took over down the stretch for SIU, however, following a Bradley service error with back-to-back kills to give the Salukis a 23-20 edge.  Graf had another kill, but a Meg Viggars kill gave the Salukis set point (24-21) and the ninth Bradley attack error of the set closed out a 25-21 SIU win.

Seven consecutive Southern Illinois points to open the third set gave the Salukis a commanding lead as SIU jumped out to an early 9-1 advantage.  Bradley cut the deficit to five (9-4), before another Southern Illinois push put the contest out of reach.  The Salukis completed the sweep by taking the third set 25-11.

Sophomore Abby Ihrke (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and freshman Brittany Lownds (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) paced the Braves defensively with 11 digs each.

Barrow led Southern Illinois with a match-high 12 kills and was one of three Salukis to reach double figures in kills.  Estrada added 10 kills and match-high 18 digs, while Kolby Meeks collected seven blocks to go with 10 kills.

Bradley closes out a brief two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against Evansville at Renaissance Coliseum.  First-year head coach Carol Price-Torok will give a free pre-match "Chalk Talk" open to all fans at 6:15 p.m. in the Zobrist Room.
