Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
PEORIA, IL – Illinois State won the first meeting of the season in the I-74 Rivalry, defeating the Bradley men's basketball team, 69-49, on Wednesday night. The Redbirds remain in first place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 7-0 record and 15-4 mark overall, while the Braves drop to 3-4 against league foes and 8-12 overall.

Sophomore Antoine Pittman led the Braves with 11 points on the night, while Luuk van Bree and freshman Jayden Hodgson added nine and seven points, respectively.

Both teams started the contest strong on the defensive end – with only five total points between the schools in the first five minutes of the game. However, Illinois State started to gain some momentum on the offensive end and used what ended up being a 29-7 run to turn a 7-4 advantage into a 36-11 lead. Bradley scored the final six points of the half as the teams headed into the intermission with ISU ahead, 36-17.

The Braves played the Redbirds to a more even second half but never seriously threatened as Illinois State pulled out the 69-49 victory.

The Redbirds made 47.2 percent of their field goals with an 11-of-24 night from beyond the 3-point arc. Deontae Hawkins finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead ISU, while Paris Lee added 14 points, six steals and five assists.

Bradley shot 31.9 percent from the field with a 6-of-18 mark from 3-point range.

The Braves look to even their conference record on Saturday with a road contest at Illinois State. The game airs on ESPN3 with first tip at 2 p.m.

Game Notes: Hodgson's seven points are the most he scored in seven career MVC contests … Bradley matched a season high with 11 different scorers on the night … Freshman Darrell Brown had his streak of double-digit performances snapped at six … His six-game streak was the longest to start an MVC career by a Brave since 1978-79 … Bradley committed fewer turnovers for the first time in conference play (17-15).
