Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
WICHITA, Kan. – Junior Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber-Schule) scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting and made a trio of three-pointers, but Wichita State scored the final nine points of the game to hold off Bradley 65-54 Friday at Charles Koch Arena.

Bradley (5-12 overall, 1-5 MVC) turned in a strong first quarter, breaking a 6-6 tie with a 10-0 run and led 16-10 after the opening 10 minutes of play.

Wichita State (7-10 overall, 2-4 MVC) scored the first seven points of the second quarter as the Shockers grabbed their first lead of the contest at 17-16, before a three-point play by Schlueter gave the Braves the lead once again at 19-17.  Bradley went to hold a 28-25 halftime advantage.

Schlueter opened the third quarter with the first of her three three-pointers on the night to extend the Bradley lead to 31-25.  The Braves were 4-of-5 from the field in the third quarter, but five turnovers in the third led to 10 Wichita State points.  The Shockers answered Schlueter's three-pointer to start the third with a 12-0 run as Bradley found itself trailing 37-31 nearing the six-minute mark of the period.

Bradley had a rare four-point play with sophomore Vanessa Markert (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) making a pair of free throws and Schlueter adding two or her own on a Wichita State technical on the play to knot the game at 40-40 with just under four minutes left in the third.  The Shockers went back in front, however, and led 50-45 heading to the fourth.

Points were at a premium early in the final stanza with the both squads scoring just two points in the first five minutes of the period.  With Bradley trailing 54-47 Schlueter hit a jumper from the elbow and followed a defensive stop with a pair of free throws to make it a three-point contest (54-51).

A driving layup by Wichita State's TaQuandra Mike made it a two possession game again as the Shockers led 56-51 with 3:05 left.  Schlueter, who had 15 of her 22 points in the second half, connected on her third three-pointer of the night to pull Bradley within two (56-54) on the next trip down the floor.

After opening the second half 13-for-24 from the field, Bradley missed its final five shots of the night and committed a pair of turnovers in the closing minutes.  Wichita State's Rangie Bessard's three-point play with 1:31 left made it a two-possession contest (59-54) and the Shockers were 6-for-8 from the line down the stretch to pull out the 65-54 victory.

"I thought offensive rebounds early in the second half gave them some extra chances," said first-year head coach Andrea Gorski.  "That along with the turnovers were the difference in the ball game."

Schlueter made three of her final four three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 22 points.  She moved into Bradley's career top 10 for three-point field goals, passing Dana Anderson for 10th all-time and her 105 career trey's are just one behind Devyn Flanagan for ninth all-time in school history.

Markert added 13 points off the bench for the Braves, while freshman Chelsea Brackmann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) had nine points and three blocks.  Senior Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) passed Shelli Braud for eighth on Bradley's career rebounding list with her eight boards pushing her career total to 680.  Lerma also had three assists and three steals in in 39 minutes.

Bessard paced Wichita State with 21 points and 10 rebounds, scoring nine of her points at the free throw line.  Diamond Lockhart joined Bessard in double figures with 11 points.

Bradley closes out a two-game road swing Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at Missouri State.
