Game Recap: Volleyball |
NORMAL, Ill. – Bradley forced 26 Illinois State attackers, but the Braves fell to the Redbirds 18-25, 13-25, 25-13, 19-25 Friday at Redbird Arena despite a match-high 17 kills from junior Erica Haslag and the 16th double-double of the year from sophomore Hannah Angeli.

Haslag inched closer to 1,000 career kills as she pushed her career total to 984 with a match-high 17 kills Friday night to go with eight digs.  Her season total of 369 kills are the most on The Hilltop since Lindsay Stalzer led the nation with a Missouri Valley Conference season-record 720 kills in 2005.

Angeli chipped in with her 16th double-double of the year, the most by a Brave since 2005 and most by a Bradley setter since 2002, with 32 assists and 12 digs.  Sophomore Kathryn Graf helped Bradley (8-15 overall, 1-8 MVC) collect nine blocks with seven blocks of her own to go with six kills.

Illinois State (13-9 overall, 6-3 MVC) took control of the first set with an early 6-0 spurt to build an 8-2 advantage.  Bradley pulled within three points on a couple of occasions with the last at 14-11 on a Graf kill, before a 4-1 Redbird spurt once again pushed the lead to six (18-12).  The Braves got no closer than five points down the stretch as Illinois State went on take the opener 25-18.  Haslag had eight kills on 16 attacks with no errors to highlight the first set for Bradley.

In the second set, Illinois State hit .385 as a team and broke the contest open with a 5-1 run midway through the frame to take a 17-9 advantage.  The Braves scored four of the next five points with Graf and senior Jamie Livaudais each notching a kill to help Bradley pull within five at 18-13.  Illinois State answered with seven consecutive points to win the second 25-13.

The Braves tallied six of their nine blocks on the night in the third set and forced 14 Illinois State attack errors in the frame to limit the Redbirds to a -.070 hitting percentage in the stanza.  Bloomington, Ill., native Ezri Edwards had a kill and block during a 4-0 Bradley run which gave the Braves an 11-6 advantage.  After Illinois State pulled within three at 11-8, Haslag had a pair of kills to highlight a 7-0 run by the Braves which pushed the BU lead to 18-8.  Bradley cruised to a 25-13 victory as Livaudais had a pair of blocks and a kill to cap the set.

The fourth set featured nine ties and five lead changes as Bradley held an 11-10 edge on Edwards' eighth kill of the evening.  Illinois State answered with three consecutive points to go back in front, however, and the Redbirds later held a 15-14 lead following a Haslag kill.

Illinois State had three consecutive points to extend the advantage to 18-14 and the Redbirds never let Bradley cut the deficit under three down the stretch as ISU closed out the match with a 25-19 win.

The Braves continue a four-match Missouri Valley Conference road swing next Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at pre-season league favorite Missouri State.
