Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with an exhibition victory over Lewis University in a contest held to support hurricane relief efforts. More than 1,300 fans attended the game at Renaissance Coliseum on Thursday with all proceeds being donated The Salvation Army.

In a balanced effort by Bradley, four Braves scored in double figures. Sophomore Darrell Brown led the team with 12 points to go with six assists and four steals. Classmate Nate Kennell also chipped in 11 points, while junior Luuk van Bree and freshman Elijah Childs each netted 10 points. Childs also led the team with six rebounds in the victory.

After Lewis opened a 9-5 lead to start the game, the Braves caught fire from beyond the arc. BU connected on 4-of-5 3-pointers as it used a 16-4 run to grab a 21-13 advantage. Kennell made two from deep during the stretch, while Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye and van Bree each added one.

The Flyers, however, would go on a run of their own and used a 12-2 spurt for a 28-26 edge. Bradley would answer with a 5-0 spurt to end the first half, though, and would use that momentum in the second stanza to not trail for the remainder of the game.

After Lewis scored the opening bucket of the second half, Bradley would not allow a field goal for nearly seven minutes of action as it used an 18-6 run to pull away for a 49-36 lead. The Flyers pulled to within six, 51-45, after a 7-0 stretch but the Braves quickly answered with a 7-0 run of their own and would not lead by less than nine points the rest of the game.

Bradley finished the contest by shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 36.0 percent from 3-point range. Meanwhile, a strong BU defense held the Flyers to just 33.9 percent shooting and a 19.2 percent clip from 3-point range, while 20 Lewis miscues led to a 23-8 advantage in points off turnovers for the Braves.

The Braves will host their second exhibition game of the preseason next Wednesday when BU welcomes Robert Morris (Chicago) in its first game of the season at Carver Arena. First tip is set for 7 p.m.
