MVC Individual Championships Day 2 Recap

Natalia Barbery and Sandra Maletin advance to the Flight 1 Doubles championship match, Wijesinghe takes fifth in Flight 4 Singles

NORMAL, IL - Bradley's doubles team of sophomore Natalia Barbery and freshman Sandra Maletin will play for the used an 8-5 victory in the semifinals Sunday to advance to the championship match of the Flight 1 Doubles draw, highlighting the second day of action for the Braves in the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Individual Tennis Championships at Illinois State University Gregory Street Tennis Courts.

Barbery and Maletin downed the Evansville duo of Soldatou/Yamada Sunday and will face the host Redbirds pairing of Golanova/Vujicic in Monday's Flight 1 Doubles championship match.  The Bradley pairing will be attempting to become just the second doubles team to earn a flight title at the MVC Individual Championships, following Flight 3 champions Ariel Dechter and Irinka Toidze in 2015.

Junior Malini Wijesinghe provided Sunday's singles highlights for the Braves, posting a pair of wins during the event's second day to take fifth in Flight 4 Singles.  Wijesinghe rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win against UNI's Harri Proudfoot, then followed with a tough, 7-5, 7-6 (1) victory against Valparaiso's Meg Modesto in the fifth-place match to finish the tournament with a 2-1 singles record.

Junior Alexa Brandt split her two matches in Flight 3 Singles Sunday, earning a 5-7, 7-5, 10-5 win in her consolation semifinal, before dropping a 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 decision to Evansville's Daria Pentsova in the fifth-place match.

In addition to the Flight 1 Doubles championship match, Bradley will be featured in two third-place matches during the final day of the MVC Individual Championships Monday.  The Brandt/Wijesinghe pairing will play for third place in the Flight 2 Doubles draw, while freshman Victoria Gonzalez will play in the Flight 5 Singles third-place match.
